Tips

§ Introduce yourself as a concerned member of the public or as a representative of your service

§ Clearly state the purpose of your For example: ‘I am writing to urge your support for/opposition to…’ OR ‘I am writing to ask you to support/ oppose …’

§ Focus on one issue Explain your concerns and how they impact the wider community and you as a voter. Support your personal views and experiences with facts. Don’t allow your letter to become longwinded. Stay focused and stick to your main points.

§ Sample letters, postcard campaigns and emails are usually considered to be less effective than a handwritten or printed and signed Personalise sample letters to portray your own views and experience, and always use your own words.

§ Ask for a response to your letter

§ Let the MP know if you have met, voted for or assisted with their election campaign

§ Never be rude, condescending or Always be polite and courteous.

§ Don’t forget to include your name, address, contact telephone number and email address

§ Encourage others who feel strongly about the issue to write to their local MP as well

§ Encourage local MPs who support your position with thankyou letter

§ Write to the appropriate MP and not all of them

§ Address your letter using the MP’s correct name and title

This is a sample letter you can copy and paste into your own word document that you print out, sign and mail to the MP (most effective) or paste into an email and send. It is best that you personalise your letter, change wording, add points specific to your situation and request. Sample simple word documents available HERE

Dear Minister Jenny Aitchison and Clayton Barr MP

It is good to see that as a result of the Train to Cessnock initiative campaign, ongoing community feedback on the Draft Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan for the Hunter and now the recent Cessnock City Council advocacy; the SRITP will include a pathway to a rail service into Cessnock.

I am writing to you today to express my concern that the NSW Government will not move quickly on the restoration of the SMR rail line from Maitland to Bellbird and commence regular passenger train services the current and growing population urgently needs.

The introduction of regular trains into this area is of great importance to me.

The support for the Train to Cessnock is strong and the project is very affordable when compared to any other rail project in the country; as shown in the published campaign business case.

The need for better public transport is desperate in this community and the state deciding we are not important enough for this to be provided as a matter of urgency means that our community will fall further behind.

Please make the decision now to commit to acquiring the Maitland to Bellbird rail corridor, then proceed with a full independent review of what is proposed; quickly act to upgrade the line if supported by that review.

This is a once in a generation legacy project that will serve the community for decades to come and you could be the champions of the whole Cessnock area being linked to work, education, family and friends with effective integrated public transport.
